A successful screening event was held at the Black Family Reunion on Saturday and Sunday, Aug 20 and 21. We had six workers on Saturday and five on Sunday to conduct screening. A total of 117 people were screened. 26% (30) had abnormal screening results with loss of protective sensation. Two of these said they were not diabetic, but when we sent them to the UC booth to have their blood sugar checked, they were diabetic with high sugars and high blood pressure. Ten percent of the people knew they were diabetic. Other foot problems we saw were corns, calluses, bunions, fungal nails, plantar fasciitis, vascular disease, cellulitis, and a tumor. We did lots of counselling and some referrals to specialists. Overall a fun and worthwhile event.
